Shock Doctrine and Climate Change

In Weather on April 10, 2013 at 9:47 am

Naomi Klein is calling out the multinational corporations behind both the climate change deniers and products that are causing climate change.

She makes a good point that ‘intellectual property rights’ are playing their usual role stalling change and innovation just when we need it most to deal with climate change.

The ‘shock doctrine’ part of climate change is ramming fracking and nuclear power plants down our throats instead of using available carbon-neutral technology.

I feel we are suffering the multiple manipulations and ‘shocks’… climate change.. financial meltdown.. bogus wars on drugs and terror..

All designed to maximize profits in the hands of the 1% and and undermine democracy and civil society at home..

We are up against a well-oiled corporate propaganda machine that is systematically undermining the public interest.

Here is Bill Maher slaggin’ climate change deniers..

The Great Arctic Cyclone of 2012

In Weather on January 1, 2013 at 11:02 am

Last summer an unusually large and fierce storm broke out in the Arctic.  What is memorable about it was its unusual intensity for a summer storm.  It also pounded what little was left of the polar ice cap up.  Sea level pressure reached about 964 millibars on August 6, 2012—a number more typical of a winter storm.

Fierce storms like this are usually caused by a clash of air masses differentiated by large temperature differences.  The Arctic his drastically heating up in the summer, melting the ice cap, generating huge storms and knocking the jet stream off course.  This results in bad summer and/or bad winter weather in Europe for example.  As the Arctic heats up the jet stream ‘wobbles’ into large amplitude waves creating ‘blocking weather patterns’ that stall extreme heat or cold, drought or floods over a particular area.

The blocking weather event was critical in Super Storm Sandy making its notorious ‘left hook’ right into New York City instead of heading out to sea.  So the ripple-effect of Arctic melting are creating more extreme and long-lasting weather events all around the world.  Here is a very interesting video that explains how the jet stream is wobbling off course due to Arctic melting.

IEA spins US CO2 emissions ‘drop’

In Polytricks, Weather on December 14, 2012 at 12:19 pm

The corporate media is trumpeting the ‘remarkable’ drop in US CO2 emissions due to fracked ‘shale gas’ (natural gas).  Apparently the US CO2 emissions dropped by 450 metric tonnes, due to using natural gas instead of coal to produce electricity.  The IEA had to also admit that this drop would also be caused by the economic depression and warmer winters.  Of course it doesn’t help that despite switching to natural gas, US CO2 emission are still going up.

I’m suspicious about the lack reports on global CO2 emission since 2010.  What is the hold-up if these figures are so crucial?  For example the 2012 IEA CO2 report uses data from 2010.  Frankly I don’t think the IEA has any credibility anyway.   The energy corporations and their media and government sock-puppets have completely muddied and distorted the whole CO2 emissions issue.

Climate change is affecting all regions in Europe, warns agency

In Weather on November 21, 2012 at 4:56 pm

The European Environment Agency has today warned that climate change is impacting all regions in Europe.  the last decade (2002-2011) being the warmest on record, with land temperatures 1.3°C warmer than the pre-industrial average.  The data shows that rainfall is increasing in Northern Europe and falling in Southern Europe.  Of course these climatic changes not only affect health but also the economy of Europe.  This has investor groups alarmed that the economy will be slowly but steadily destroyed by the rising costs of climate change. Here is a prescient video warning from Climate Scientist Stephen Schneider in 1979.

So its not like we haven’t had plenty of warning about what is going on.  The unprecedented weather events of the last few short years have chastened many deniers.  But like the cigarette lobby fighting to keep their cancer-sticks in the marketplace, we have the nauseating spectacle of the climate change denier industry buying enough political muscle to stop even talk of another Kyoto Deal… pfffttt!!.. Here is Bill Maher’s take on the climate change deniers.

The mystery of the disappearing islands

In BC Polytricks on August 20, 2012 at 8:55 am

The tar-sands pipeline company Enbridge is taking a lot of heat these days for the crude (ahem) propaganda that they are flooding the airways with to justify their bogus, destructive Northern Gateway Pipeline proposal.

The flack they are getting is well deserved.  Enbridge  produced a TV propaganda video about the pipeline route through BC that ‘disappears’ two major mountain ranges and thousands of islands.  The bogus video totally misrepresents the problems of the terrain.  Its yet another classic example of  the oil industry response to its opponents.. they alternate between  bullying .. condescending… and outright bullshit.  Their insincerity is breathtaking.

Here is a link to The Tyee story with links to the original Enbridge video and then the deconstructed video showing how many island were ‘disappeared’.

US drought produces a repeat of 2008 food crisis

In Polytricks, Weather on August 9, 2012 at 10:28 am

A perfect storm of (ahem) weather disasters are creating a repeat of the 2008 food crisis which produced food riots around the world, the Arab Spring, etc.  Seems that history is repeating itself again.  The latest UN FAO numbers show all food staples spiking upwards in response to the great US drought of 2012. Already panicked nations are stockpiling food. This will no doubt make matters worse.

I know I’m a ‘glass-half-empty’ kinda guy.. in fact I have had to endure taunts of being ‘chicken-little’ from bobble-headed pollyannas.  I don’t mind .. I don’t believe in sacrificing history and common sense in order to appear ‘positive’ to the kool-aid drinking masses.. ;o)

Canada, a failed petro-state

In BC Polytricks, Polytricks on August 9, 2012 at 10:04 am

In comparison to Norway, Canada is a failed petro-state.  All you have to do is take a look at what Norway is getting in oil royalties. (70-80%) Compare that to the ridiculous 10% royalties Alberta gets. Not only that but the tar sands gunk is taxed at 6% until it ‘breaks-even’.. pffftttt!!.. Here is a link to the great series of articles on this scam in The Tyee..

The article shows how Norway just summoned all the big oil corporations to a meeting and basically just announced that they would be raising the royalties from 50% to 90% (this was due to the Arab oil embargo of 1973.)  Sure the big oil companies threw a big hissy-fit at the meeting and threatened to leave Norway, (but of course they didn’t).  Only in Canada would we sell our oil for a 30% DISCOUNT to please US oil refineries at a time of record high oil prices.

Basically Canadian oil is being thrown away to the lowest bidder.  There is no pipeline to Eastern Canada, (where provinces pay foreign market rates for oil?!?).  All the pipelines go to the US refineries.  In the 70’s Canada had 40 oil refineries, now we have 19?  How is this for an idea, how about we build a pipeline to Ontario instead of to The Great Bear Rainforest?  How about we actually build refineries in Alberta to refine the tar sands gunk into real oil which we then can pipe to Eastern Canada?  How about using Canadian oil for Canada instead of selling bargain-basement oil to foreigners?  So there you have it .. our (mis)leadership is selling off our valuable non-renewable resources to the lowest bidder as fast as they can.  The corruption and gross incompetence is there for all to see but somehow the corporate media manages to miss the real story.. ;o)

“The godfather of global warming”

In Polytricks, Weather on August 6, 2012 at 8:20 am

Riiiight!… Now scientists warning of the effects of Climate Change are being compared to Vito Corleone, the Godfather of the Sicilian Mafia?? …COME ON!! …Dr. James Hansen, head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies had the temerity to give an interview to AP suggesting that the devastating weather extremes being experience by the whole planet are clear proof that Climate Change is destroying our economy and lives… here is the link..

The oil corporations and their corporate allies are in full spin cycle trying to explain away the frightening increase of extreme weather events throughout the planet. Their main weapon is ad hominem attacks and death threats on any scientist brave enough to tell the truth about what is happening to our weather.. here is another link to this problem..

Spin and threaten as they like, the Climate Change Deniers are faced with an avalanche of extreme weather ‘events’ breaking records all over the planet at an ever increasing rate. In fact Dr James Hansen says that he underestimated the rapidity of the change.. see here..

As Bob Dylan once sang.. “you don’t need to be a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowin’ … ”  ;o)

Ship tracks off US east coast

The above satellite photo shows ‘ship tracks’ off the US coast. Ship tracks are clouds that form from the exhaust of ships in still ocean air. Its a similar process to the jet trails left by aircraft in the upper atmosphere. At all levels, unintended consequences are dogging our footsteps.. ;o)

Drought map

In Weather on August 2, 2012 at 10:55 pm

Of course on the west coast it barely feels like summer even happened yet but in the US the drought is busy destroying the half the corn crop.. to the point that voices are being raised questioning the use of corn for fuel (ethanol).. DUH!!.. only in the USA would they turn food into gasoline.. pfffttt!..

The drought which is being called the worst drought in 50 years..  is actually getting worse.. wiping out nearly 40% of the soy crop as well.. and yet again the climate change elephant in the room seems strangely hard for the corporate media to see.. here is the article in The Guardian..

here is the map..

Droughts throughout US summer 2012 (could the Climate Change Deniers be wrong?.. duh!.. ;o)

Oh No! Here we go again

In Weather on August 2, 2012 at 2:43 am

New Zealand scientist are calling the El Nino of 2012. (as if we don’t have enough going on this particular year!..ha..ha.) I guess we can expect a warmish wet winter here on the coast, AND to get our asses kicked with the wind storms knocking out power etc.. groan.. (notice how we are getting back-to-back ‘el nino/la ninas?.. nobody is talking about the  global warming elephant in the room.. pfffttt!)
