US shuts down the office in charge with the closure of Guantanamo Bay

The Obama administration has decided to close the office devoted to closing the Guantanamo prison in Cuba.  This is a pretty clear signal that Guantanamo is not going to be shut down any time soon despite campaign pledges made nearly five years ago.

The foul-smelling, unlawful and disgraceful torture camp is a decades-old poisonous legacy of the Bush Junta.  Its an outrage that it hasn’t been shut down and the people responsible for setting it up thrown in jail themselves.

The inability of the USG to deal with this poisonous issue does not bode well for the future.  It signals quite clearly that the rule of law and basic civil liberties are awkward inconveniences in the ‘War on Terra’.  A war built on preposterous lies and unsubstantiated fear-mongering.

Basically the War on Terror is the bully’s dictum, I can hit you but you aren’t allowed to hit me back.  This kind of nonsense just breeds contempt and violence against the USG.

  1. I didn’t know about the closure – thanks for posting. I share your disgust.
