Kathryn Bigelow is creating a big stink with her latest movie “Zero Dark Thirty” about the assassination of Osama bin Laden. Naomi Wolf is comparing her to Leni Riefenstahl and Senators are standing up to harshly criticize a central theme in her new movie, that torture led to capture and killing of Osama bin Laden. Others are criticizing Naomi Wolf for her comparison.
“Waterboarding” is not only torture but also as torture it results in garbage information. Torture is sadistic vengeance and has no sane part in any lawful investigation. As far as I’m concerned Kathryn Bigelow is glamorizing torture in the same way she glamorized the military occupation of Iraq in “Hurt Locker”.
Did Kathryn Bigelow get special access from the CIA to do this film? Somehow her and her writer got to interview central CIA agents in the investigation as well as the top secret assassination team that went in. That couldn’t have happened without clearance from the top.
My feeling is that this is a PR exercise and the brouhaha is all contrived. Why the USG wants to brag about killing a terrorist that took them ten years to find I can’t quite figure out.
Then there is the thorny problem of the FBI having no evidence to tie Osama bin Laden to 9/11.. oops! Never mind, he is a well known terrorist bogey-man and Holyweird is busy making movies about how the USG killed him. Still I wonder why he was living out his days living next to what has been called the Pakistani equivalent of West Point.
So is Kathryn Bigelow like Leni Riefenstahl? No, Leni made her notorious movie “Triumph of Will” in 1934, before most of the horrifying crimes of the Nazi regime. Kathryn Bigelow has made this movie with the full knowledge that there is never, EVER any legal, ethical or efficacious reason to torture anyone.
She also made public highly classified USG tactics and intelligence. Now who did this recently?.. oh yes.. Julian Assange! But Julian won’t be on the short-list for an Oscar for pimping for the war criminals any time soon… ;o)
