Head of CIA caught because of lack of computer smarts

General Petraeus, former head of the CIA got caught because he and his girlfriend thought that they had computer smarts.  Paula Broadwell decided to send anonymous threatening emails to someone she felt was a threat to her relationship to the former head of the CIA.  Problem was her faked Yahoo email account still shows the IP address of the sending machine.   She never used Tor or some other proxy server to hide her IP address.  So her IP address was cross-referenced from hotel wifi and guest list records.  She wasn’t hard to find at all, despite gaining the rank of colonel in military intelligence two years before.

General Petraeus was appointed head of the CIA a year ago despite having zero training or experience in intelligence.  Petraeus’s skill was self-promotion and hype.  His sharing a Gmail account to hide his affair with Paula Broadwell was amateurish in the extreme for a head of the CIA.  This has been tried and failed method of anonymity for terrorist groups since 2004.  Several high profile terrorist court cases had exposed how useless it was to conceal identities online.  You really can’t get a more extreme example of how poorly chosen he was for the job.
